“Smart City Planning”

The challenges of the 21st century, triggered by Climate Change, Natural Hazards (Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Floods, Droughts etc.) or Man-Made Chaos(Terrorism, Armed Conflict, etc.) and the explosive demographic growth and concentration of population in urban environments, expose us to an unprecedented situation characterized by; Migration, Refugees and Involuntary displacement, Poverty and Inequality, and the deterioration of our life quality due to chaotic mobility, environmental pollution, insecurity associated with urban violence, epidemics and emerging pathologies, among other issues.


At the same time, the generation of knowledge occurs at an unprecedented pace in history. IOT, will allow to duplicate the available knowledge every 12 hours, when around II World War this pace was every 25 years.

Brief



The course splits into three different learning scenarios:


  • Lectures

  • Workshop

  • Guided Tour to case-study cities in Europe



The Program aims to provide an amazing opportunity for students to engage within a learning experience that will enhance not only their technical skills, but also inmerse in a globalized professional environment, and multi-cultural festival that will build-up their network and upgrade their management abilities and social interaction skills.


The course includes participating in the “Smart City” event to take place in The Netherlands (The Hague) during June 27-28, which will allow students to get in touch and interact with top-leaders from such diverses contexts as; Europe, Middle East, Asia and Latin America.


The course includes a week in the City of Warsaw (Poland) within the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies-Institute for Regional and Global Studies.

The visit to the University of Warsaw, will include 3-lectures and a jointly workshop that will engage foreign students with polish students, enabling all attendees to share experiences, test different approaches, methodologies and planning tools to solve a real challenge.


Finally, this unique opportunity includes a visit to some flagship projects that are being developed in The Netherlands as Smart City Planning-pilots, so that students learn not just from listening to others but also by experience themselves a city, its services, transport network, housing solutions, public space and amenities.

The Course organizer is Ph.D. Jorge Diaz, an International Senior Consultant with more than twenty-five years of experience, and who has been invited as a keynote speaker at the event in The Hague (June 27)


He was also a visiting professor at the University of Warsaw during 2017 and participated as a keynote speaker in different events as the TOR-Transport conference.
